Staking out the Joint

A couple of volunteers spent an afternoon at West Beckham Green on May 30th. After a picnic lunch they went on the hunt for self-seeded saplings among the bracken and brambles.

After a couple of hours, they had marked nearly 170 tiny trees with stakes and tree guards.

This will allow us to protect the saplings from the blades of the scythes that we use to keep the paths clear. The range of species shows how well the woodland is doing – Holly, Rowan, Silver Birch, Beech, Sweet Chestnut, Hazel, Oak, Hawthorn, Field Maple and Elder.
