Making Hay – Even When the Sun Doesn’t Shine

The dozen or so volunteers at the Sustead Common haymaking day arrived to find the hay meadow very tall and very wet, so the four scythers had their work cut out to make any impression but they pressed on, with the rakers clearing away the cuttings. By the end of the morning, it was gratifying to see what a difference had been made, with the meadow now neat and tidy.

At donut time John spoke of various other groups in North Norfolk with similar objectives to ours and we considered ways in which we could work together to further improve our environment; he also brought us up to date regarding future activities and the possibilities of improving the trust’s machinery. We went on to discuss the various motives for coming to work parties, some wanting to get jobs done, others ready to work but also to stop from time to time to enjoy the companionship. I think it was agreed that the balance between these two points of view accounts for the continued good turnouts at events.
